Steffen Hindelang is a Full Professor of International Investment and Trade Law at the Faculty of Law, Uppsala University, Sweden, where he also serves as Director of the Master's Programme in Investment Treaty Arbitration and as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Swedish Institute of International Law.
His work bridges academic research and legal practice — combining expertise in international investment arbitration, EU law, and economic security law. He has served as independent legal expert and ICSID arbitrator since 2011, with extensive experience in proceedings before ICSID, the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and national courts across the United States, Sweden, Germany, Australia, Israel, and Singapore. As co-founder and Executive Director of the CELIS Institute (Berlin), Steffen Hindelang leads the leading international forum for research and policy dialogue on FDI screening and economic security. CELIS is an independent, non-partisan organisation fostering dialogue between policymakers, the investment community, and academia on investment screening, economic security, and competitiveness.
His research covers international investment law and arbitration, EU trade and investment policy, investment screening and geoeconomics, the autonomy of EU law, free movement of capital, and the regulation of communications and digital markets. He is the author of two monographs published by Oxford University Press (2009) and Springer (2019), co-editor of multiple volumes including with Oxford University Press and Edward Elgar, and has published in leading journals including the Common Market Law Review, the European Law Review, the Journal of World Investment & Trade, and Archiv des Völkerrechts.
He has advised governments and institutions including the German Federal Government, the European Parliament, the European Commission, the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag), and UNCTAD.
